Dr. Mikao Usui-The Founder of Reiki

The First Grand Master of Reiki

Dr. Usui was a professor at a university in Japan in the late 1800's. One day a student raised their hand and asked Dr. Usui why during the time of Jesus, Jesus healed people with his hands, in fact many people had this ability. Dr. Usui could not answer his student and this troubled him. The very next day he resigned from his position at the university and went on a quest that lasted several years to learn how to heal with his hands. He traveled to many areas of the globe seeking this method of healing. His travels led him back to Japan. It was atop the Sacred Mt. Kurama in Japan that he was given the Sacred gift of Reiki Healing.

Mrs. Hawayo Takata

The Third Grand Master of Reiki

Mrs. Takata was born on the island of Kauai in 1900 and raised on a sugar cane camp. She grew up, married and gave birth to two daughters. Her husband transitioned from this life when their daughters were young and left Mrs. Takata to raise them on her own. She fell ill and returned to her home country of Japan for medical treatment. It was there she met and received Reiki Treatments for her ailments from Dr. Hayashi. She completely recovered from her medical conditions and trained in all levels of Reiki with Dr. Hayashi. Before Dr. Hayashi transitioned Mrs. Takata was recognized as the Third Grand Master of Reiki.

She was the first person allowed and "entrusted" to take Reiki out of Japan and into the western world in 1936.

I am greatly honored for my lineage to date back to one of the 22 Reiki Masters Mrs. Takata trained and initiated in the 1970's.

Johannes Reindl

Grandmaster and Lineage Bearer of Usui Shiki Ryoho

Johannes was born in Linz, Austria in the year 1977. In his late teens, Johannes attended First and Second Degree Reiki classes, developing a solid Reiki Practice for many years. Prior to his four year training as a Reiki Master with Phyllis Furumoto in 2013, he was her sign language, German and French interpreter for her Reiki Classes and presentations.

In 2019 before Phyllis made her transition she recognized Johannes as her successor as Lineage Bearer of Usui Shiki Ryoho Reiki.

To accept this honor and to grow in this he holds in what he had learned in his first degree class: “Reiki will support you in your path and Reiki will call you and in times when you might think “this is too much for me” Reiki will make you grow and go beyond what you might hold true for you.”

I had the great honor of meeting Johannes on a couple of occasions, attending Reiki presentations he organized in Kaslo, BC and Port Townsend, WA. I hope to get to know him more over the years. His profound dedication to his Sacred role as the Lineage Bearer of Reiki was very apparent and admired!

Dr. Chujiro Hayashi

The Second Grand Master of Reiki

Dr, Hayashi was a physician in the Imperial Japanese Navy. He "repaired" a lot of bodies during the war, after his deployment ended he sought to "heal" bodies. He received Reiki treatments and Reiki training from Dr. Usui. Before Dr. Usui made his transition from this life he recognized Dr. Hayashi as the Second Grand Master of Reiki. Dr. Hayashi and his wife opened the very first Reiki Clinic in Tokyo.

When I was undergoing my year and a half Reiki Master training in Maui, it was Dr. Hayashi I felt most drawn to. Ironically my Reiki path led me to work for ten years as the Reiki Master on staff at a medical clinic in Seattle.

Phyllis Lei Furumoto

The Fourth Grand Master of Reiki

Phyllis is the granddaughter of Mrs. Takata. She traveled extensively with her grandmother helping to organize Mrs. Takata's Reiki Classes. Phyllis trained in all three levels of Reiki with Mrs. Takata. After her grandmother transitioned in 1980, Phyllis was recognized as the Fourth Grand Master of Reiki. She was instrumental in forming The Reiki Alliance in 1983, a global organization of Reiki Masters who vow to practice and teach Reiki in the traditional way of Mrs. Takata, and which I am a proud member of.

Phyllis is known for globalizing Reiki, she introduced this sacred healing art to many corners of the earth. Reiki community was important to Phyllis, and she fostered a strong and supportive community of Reiki Masters & students of Reiki.

One of the greatest honors of my life was meeting and attending a presentation Phyllis organized for 5 of us Reiki Masters in Maui. Never was I so nervous to meet someone. Her energy was as strong as a mountain yet her words and teachings filled with wisdom & eloquence.
